Scriptwriting lesson 102

|

Last time, we kind of vomited a story. A story that we did not necessarily find interesting. Let’s consider this to be the beginning of a writing order. Now we have to squeeze the text like a lemon, get out the juice, and from there, compose a hell of a cocktail .

To do this, let’s get back to the character. A good starting point. Our main character and what s/he wants.

In case the character is not interesting enough, we may enhance him/her and/or look for  an interesting dramatic situation that emerges from this first draft. Then it is useful to ask yourself the best character to bring this situation. Who has the most conflict. We can have get some inspiration in the 36 dramatic situations, or the 25 plots or so.

Of all the information thrown on paper, let’s choose the strongest and the most surprising and most dramatic pieces, and reorganize them to create a narrative that gives pleasure to the readers.

Now, we can not really work on the cinematographic narrative structure; but it is already a challenge to find a good story, and to note alongside the narrative ideas that come to our minds.

At the end of this work, we get a one-page synopsis (one pager), which gives us a film promise.
